Western versus Asian Makeup Trends

Living in both Asia and North America, I’ve witnessed how different Asian and Western beauty ideals look like. There is no right or wrong, no better or less standard of beauty but it truly intrigues me when I think about how I used to use makeup and how I use makeup now! What interests me even more is how different makeup is used, and what features are highlighted in Asian and Western beauty. Here are some of my observations on Western versus Asian Makeup Trends using the La Petite Robe Noire Makeup collection by Guerlain.

Have you watched videos on an Asian and Western makeup routine? It’s really interesting and I encourage you to! If you want me to film one, give me a holla in the comments below!

The following is a broad generalization based on popular makeup regime ideals, but of course, like anything, doesn’t represent everyone.

FOUNDATION

In Asia, lighter skin is an ideal to be achieved. If you walk into a drugstore, I guarantee that there are lots of moisturizers, and body washes that have whitening extracts.

Whereas in North America, being tan with foundation looking matte is usually noticeable! I, for one do enjoy a nice medium in between! In addition, there is a strong emphasis on skincare in Asia- particularly Korea!

CONTOURING

I never used to contour. In Korean beauty, the goal is for healthy looking, dewy skin! Blush is usually used to do the contours and even then, is done in a subtle manner. Whereas in Western beauty, contouring is huge for adding definition and highlighting those features.

The Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Lip & Cheek Pink Tint acts as both a subtle colouring to your lips and pink blush to add some colour to your complexion!

EYE MAKEUP

Western makeup focuses on enhancing the eye creases and highlights the eyes. Bold lashes, visible mascara. In Asian beauty regimes, mascara is also used to add length and volume to your lashes.

I actually love the Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire mascara. The packaging is stunning, but more importantly, I’ve noticed zero clumping during application, and there is a rounded tip at the top of the brush to ease application on the lower lashes!

LIPSTICK

The gradient lip is a popular Korean trend, where it’s an ombre from the inner lip!

I’ve tried the Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire lip colours and tried it for both the Western and Asian trends. It glides on beautifully for a full lip of colour and has a fragrant scent to it. That being said, it can also act as a tint if used to create the lip gradient as it glides on pretty light at first swipe.

One thing that is important to both western and Asian make up is taking care of your skin. I share part of my skincare routine in my blog post with Biore here.

The La Petite Robe Noire was a gift from Guerlain! All thoughts and opinions are solely my own!
